Can You Sleep in a Storage Unit in the UK?
If you're stuck in a housing crunch or you've had a long shift and your next place isn't ready — a storage unit can seem like an easy, private solution. It's out of the way. It locks. Nobody's asking questions.
But sleeping or living in a self-storage unit is illegal in the UK, unsafe by any measure, and a breach of every operator's terms and conditions, including ANVSJ's. This page explains why, what we do if it happens, and where to find genuine help if you're in a tight spot.
The legal position: storage units are not habitable spaces
Under UK health and safety law, building regulations and fire safety legislation, storage units are classified as spaces for goods, not people. That classification is not a technicality. It means these spaces are built without the ventilation, fire escape routes, sanitation or thermal insulation that the law requires for anywhere a person sleeps.
Using a unit as accommodation breaches your licence agreement and can expose the site operator to serious liability. That is why all mainstream providers, including ANVSJ, prohibit it outright.
Why sleeping in a storage unit is genuinely dangerous
This is not a paperwork issue. The risks are physical and immediate:
Fire and smoke. Steel containers and internal units are not fitted with escape routes for occupants. Smoke fills the space quickly and there is no early-warning system designed for a person inside.
No ventilation or heating. Units get dangerously cold in a Yorkshire winter and uncomfortably hot in summer. If someone uses a fuel-burning device for warmth, the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning is real.
No sanitation or running water. There are no toilets, sinks or washing facilities. This creates hygiene problems and falls well short of even emergency housing standards.
Electrical hazards. Temporary heaters, extension leads and cooking appliances are banned for good reason. They start fires in environments with no suppression system.
Security systems. Our sites have perimeter alarms and CCTV monitoring. Out-of-hours presence will be picked up, and staff or the police will respond.
A storage unit is engineered to protect belongings from theft and weather. It is not designed to keep a person safe overnight.
What happens if ANVSJ staff think someone is sleeping on site
Our first concern is welfare, not enforcement. If we suspect a unit is being used for accommodation, this is what we do:
A member of staff will attend — usually with a colleague — to check there is no immediate risk to life. If we have any concern about someone's safety, we will contact emergency services or the police to assist.
If the situation is confirmed, your licence agreement will be reviewed and access can be withdrawn under the terms you signed. We may also ask you to remove your goods within a set period.
We enforce this policy because we have a duty of care to everyone on site — not to catch people out.
Can you sleep in Big Yellow, Safestore or any other storage company?
No. The prohibition applies across the entire sector. Big Yellow, Safestore and independent operators are all bound by the same planning consents, fire regulations and insurance conditions. If you are looking for an exception somewhere, there is not one.
Safer options if you need somewhere to stay tonight
If you are between homes or facing a housing emergency in Sheffield or Rotherham, these are routes that can actually help:
Your local council. Sheffield City Council and Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council both have housing options teams. They can assess your situation and arrange emergency accommodation where it is available.
Shelter and local night shelters. Shelter (0808 800 4444) provides free advice around the clock. St Mungo's and local hostels across South Yorkshire can offer short-notice placements.
Your university, if you are a student. Sheffield Hallam and the University of Sheffield both have emergency accommodation arrangements through their student unions and accommodation offices.
Short-term lets. Reputable platforms list verified weekly or monthly rooms. Always look for hosts with clear ID checks and recent reviews.
Family or friends. A temporary sofa in a private home is far safer — and warmer — than an industrial site in Rotherham or Sheffield at night.
If keeping your belongings safe while you sort out your next place is part of the problem, that is exactly what we are here for. Store your things with us and take one pressure off the situation.
