What is self storage?Self storage is an affordable method of storing items in a rented holding unit whilst you don’t need them. They’re typically used when people need to store items which they don’t have room for in their house or flat, as well as by businesses that need additional storage space. Many people use self storage if they need to store:
- Household items if they’re in the process of moving
- Student household items and furniture during holidays
- Business tools, equipment and stock
Why use self storage? There are a number of reasons why people use self storage facilities:
People lack space in their homeA lot of people use a self storage facility because they don;t have enough space in their home to store all of their belongings. Self storage facilities, like ANVSJ, therefore provide a safe space for people to store their items that they don’t use on a regular basis, and can come and collect them when they need to.
MovingThe process of moving house can be difficult and stressful. Occasionally, people purchase a new build property and sell their existing home, which means they have to rent smaller accommodation or move back in with their parents or family member until their house is built. A self storage facility gives people the option of keeping their belongings in once place during the moving process, as there may not be enough space for them all in a smaller flat or family member’s home.
Storing seasonal itemsThere are plenty of household items that people only use at certain points in the year, and therefore aren’t worth storing in your home or garage to free up more accessible space. Winter items like Christmas trees and summer items like outside furniture and lawn mowers mean there’s always items that need to be stored away for a long period of time.
Storing business itemsBusiness storage can be a cost-effective solution, when compared to renting larger premises for more storage space. Businesses typically use a self storage solution to keep stock or equipment that isn’t used on a regular basis.
What can I not store? There are a number of items that we would recommend against you storing, as well as items that are illegal to be placed into personal storage:
- Flammable, combustible, or toxic materials should not be stored in a personal storage facility
- Perishable food items are likely to spoil over time, and can also attract unwanted pests to our facilities
- Anything that you don’t own is illegal to store in the UK
- Illegal items – anything which is illegal to have possession of in the UK, you cannot put into storage
- Currency – despite our storage sites being extremely safe and secure, we wouldn’t recommend storing money in a personal storage facility.
Is self storage only useful for big items? No, self storage can be useful for all kinds of items which you possess. Some of the most popular items put into storage include crockery, tools, photographs and musical instruments, so there are many items that can be stored. As well as smaller items, the most popular items that get stored in the UK are furniture, such as wardrobes, sofas and drawers.
